Feeding your baby

2 min read Sources: CDC and AAP guidanceChecked October 2026

The short version

  • Newborns eat every 2 to 3 hours. Watch for hands to mouth and rooting before crying starts.
  • 6 or more wet diapers a day by day 5 means feeding is working.
  • Breast, bottle, or both: a fed baby is the goal.

However you feed your baby, breast or bottle or both, you are feeding them well. The early weeks are tiring and loud, and that is normal.

What to know

Newborns eat every 2 to 3 hours

Watch for early hunger cues: hands to the mouth, rooting, lip-smacking. Crying is a late sign, so you can offer a feed before it gets there.

Wet diapers tell you it is working

By day 5, expect 6 or more wet diapers a day. Steady weight gain at checkups is the other sign things are going well.

When to call someone

Call your pediatrician if baby has fewer than 6 wet diapers a day, will not wake to feed, or seems to be losing weight.

What next?

Some moms read about sleep next, since feeding and sleep are tangled together right now. Others just need to close the screen and feed the baby. Both are right.
