When your child is wired differently

After the diagnosis: this part is for you

2 min read Sources: AAP, CDC, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)Checked October 2026

The short version

  • Your child is the same child they were yesterday. Now you have a word, and words open doors.
  • You do not have to decide everything this month. Start with one or two supports.
  • Free help: early intervention under age 3, your public school from age 3, and parent-to-parent groups.

Maybe you cried in the car after the appointment. Maybe you felt relief that someone finally saw what you have seen for years. Maybe both, within the same hour. A diagnosis of autism, ADHD, dyslexia, or another difference can bring grief, relief, fear, and fierce love all at once. Your child is the same child they were yesterday. What changed is that you now have a word, and words open doors.

What to know

Grief and love can sit together

Many parents grieve the future they pictured, then feel guilty for grieving. The grief is about expectations, not about your child's worth. It usually softens as you get to know the future that is actually coming.

You do not have to decide everything this month

There will be many recommendations and opinions. Start with one or two supports that fit your child and your family, and add more later. Taking a few weeks to learn is not losing time.

Ask what each support is for

For any therapy, ask what the goal is, how progress is measured, and how it respects your child's comfort. Good providers welcome these questions.

Telling family is your call

Share when you are ready, with the people you choose. A short script helps: “We learned that our child is autistic. It helps us understand how they experience the world. Here is what helps them.” You do not owe anyone a debate.

Free help is the law

Children under 3 can get a free evaluation and services through your state's early intervention program. From age 3, your public school district must evaluate children who may need special education, at no cost. Put requests in writing.

Find someone a few years ahead

Parent-to-parent programs match you with a parent whose child has a similar diagnosis. Many families say it was the first time they felt understood.

Every state has these programs under different names. to see yours.
